The July newsletter at St. Peter is about half the length of other months, so here’s my pastoral half-column! Huge thanks to Christin for all the work she’s done on VBS including picking the stories- I’m so excited to see it come to fruition in a couple of weeks!
Bible Superheroes
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
– 1 Timothy 4:12
Have you heard about this year’s theme for Vacation Bible School? The 1st-5th graders will be spending 4 days looking at “Kid Superheroes” in the Bible. (The younger kids will be exploring some of the same stories for three mornings at the Catholic church.)
The first Bible Superhero we’ll be looking at is Miriam. In Exodus 2, this young girl courageously watched over her younger brother Moses when their mother hid him in the Nile River. The second hero is Samuel. God called him when he was just a young boy, and he responded, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Then there’s David, who as an inexperienced youth defeated the mighty Philistine warrior Goliath with God’s help. Finally, there’s Mary, the young woman who was willing to listen to God, even when what was asked of her seemed impossible.
The key to all of these “superhero” stories is that they didn’t accomplish their great things on their own. Their heroism was their willingness to allow God to work through them. They didn’t let their age or lack of experience get in their way. Instead, they trusted God could work even through them.
Whether you’re 9 years old or 90, that’s true for you as well. God can use whatever gifts or talents you have as long as you’re willing to offer yourself for God’s work.
Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Daniel Flucke
